Willem F. Duisenberg Fellowship
The Willem F. Duisenberg Fellowship is an invitational fellowship for researchers from abroad who have an outstanding record in the field of applied monetary economics, macro-economics or public finance.
The Fellowship was set up in 2007 in honour of Willem F. Duisenberg and builds on NIAS's successful Jelle Zijstra Fellowship programme.
Willem Duisenberg (1935-2005) succeeded Jelle Zijlstra (1918 - 2001) as President of De Nederlandsche Bank (the Dutch Central Bank) in 1981. During his career Duisenberg worked at the International Monetary Fund, as Professor of Macro-Economics at the University of Amsterdam, as Minister of Finance, as President of De Nederlandsche Bank, and from 1998 to 2003 as first President of the European Central Bank. In this latter capacity he was instrumental in the introduction of the European Monetary Union and the Euro.
The Willem F. Duisenberg Fellowship is sponsored by De Nederlandsche Bank, the Dutch Ministry of Finance and several major Dutch financial institutions: the ING Group, Rabobank Nederland, ABN-AMRO and AEGON.
This residential fellowship is awarded to scholars who have an outstanding record in the field of applied monetary economics, applied macroeconomics or public finance. He/she will carry out his/her research project as a member of the NIAS academic community, and will be encouraged to meet with Dutch academics, policy makers and bankers to debate current issues.
The Fellowship is for a period of three to five months and carries a monthly stipend of € 10,000. The fellowship includes a private study, research facilities, a research assistant, accommodation and travel expenses, as well as possibilities to organise a workshop, invite colleagues, etc.
