Facilities for Fellows

Office and support

Fellowships at NIAS are residential fellowships. The NIAS Fellow will be allotted an office in the main building with a personal computer and internet connection, and be entitled to the use of the library service and a limited amount of support.

Accommodation

Free accommodation in a studio apartment on campus (or equivalent housing) is offered to unaccompanied Fellows from outside the Netherlands.

Housing at subsidised rate is offered to NIAS Fellows from outside the Netherlands who bring their partners or families. Accommodation is offered in apartments and family homes in Wassenaar. The net contribution to be paid in 2014/15 will be € 450 per month (utilities included).

Fellows from the Netherlands living within a range of 30 kilometres of the Institute are expected to commute daily. Commuting costs are reimbursed on the basis of government regulations. Other Fellows from the Netherlands can apply for free accommodation in a studio apartment on campus. In that case, commuting costs will not be reimbursed. Occasional overnight stays are also possible.

Stipends and replacement subsidies for regular NIAS Fellows

Scholars with over 10 years of research experience after their Ph.D. degree will be awarded a Senior Fellowship carrying a stipend or replacement subsidy of € 3800 per month.

Scholars with up to 10 years of research experience after their Ph.D. degree will be awarded a Junior Fellowship carrying a stipend or replacement subsidy of € 2600 per month.

Stipends are awarded to Fellows from outside the Netherlands. The stipend is paid to the Fellow directly but may also be paid to the Fellow's university.

Replacement subsidies are awarded to Fellows affiliated with Dutch universities and payable to their university departments. The stated amounts are based on full time equivalent replacement.

Lunches, coffee/tea, academic and social activities

Lunches on weekdays, coffee and tea in the main building, as well as the monthly contribution to academic and social activities are included in the fellowship.

Travel costs

The Institute will reimburse non-Dutch Fellows' travel costs to and from NIAS (not family) once.
