Golestan Fellowships were established by the late Prof. Dr. Med. Kenower Weimar Bash, a Swiss psychiatrist who was a NIAS Fellow during the academic year 1973/74, and who, upon his death in 1986, left his estate to the NIAS Fellows' Association (NFA). The NFA created a special foundation, the Golestan Foundation, to administer the estate. Professor Bash worked extensively in Iran; Golestan is the Persian word for rose garden.
Golestan Fellowships are available for non-Dutch scholars only. Successful applicants should be engaged in fundamental research in the medical or biological sciences and should have a specialization which would make it profitable for them to work in an international setting and be in daily contact with scholars who carry out advanced research in the humanities and social sciences. They should already have made a significant contribution to their field of research and should ideally be between 35 and 55 years of age.
The Fellowship carries a stipend set by the Rector depending on individual circumstances (maximum of 4300 per month). Unaccompanied Fellows will receive free housing and Fellows who bring their partner or family are entitled to housing at a subsidised rent.
Candidates are invited to submit their application together with a curriculum vitae, a list of their (major) publications and a description of the research they propose to carry out while at NIAS (each item not exceeding a maximum of three pages) not later than 1 March, 18 months before the beginning of the research year.
Where at all possible, Golestan Fellowships will be granted alternately to a Swiss and non-Swiss researcher.

Before completing the application form and sending it in, please take time to read carefully the information about the Golestan Fellowship as given in this website. Please note, that NIAS is a residential institute and that Golestan fellowships are awarded for advanced research only during a full academic year, running from 1 September till 30 June, or for one semester of five months. NIAS does not provide fellowships for training programmes or educational purposes. Nor does it offer courses, or financial support to conduct research elsewhere.
If you are interested in being listed as a candidate for this fellowship, please download and send in the application form. Information received from you will be treated as strictly confidential and will be used only by the Scholarship Committee, the Directorate and External Referees. Only fully completed formal applications, together with the required enclosures will be considered. You are requested to limit the enclosures to a maximum of three pages, double spaced text.
Applications that do not meet the requirements will not be considered.
Three letters in support of your application should be sent separately by professional referees. These referees should not be affiliated with the applicant's home institution, and preferably be from outside the applicant's home country (or state in case of the US). These letters should contain the referee's views on:
- the applicant's scholarly accomplishments
- the applicant's research proposal
- the applicant's ability to exchange ideas in an international, interdisciplinary community.
The letters of support should be sent by the application deadline to Application@NIAS.KNAW.NL indicating the name of the applicant in the subject. Letters sent by regular mail to NIAS, Research Planning, will not be refused; letters by fax will not be accepted.
Receipt of the completed application will be taken as an indication that you agree to our seeking further professional referees, if deemed necessary.
Books or publications submitted in support of an application should be sent by regular mail, and will be returned after completion of the selection procedure in case your application is unsuccessful. Publications by successful applicants will be placed in the NIAS library.
