NIAS Fellows are selected from prominent researchers and senior scholars in the humanities and social sciences who have already made a significant contribution to their field. Scholarly achievements, reputation and quality of publications are aspects considered in the evaluation process.

Stipends
Fellows from universities or institutes outside the Netherlands receive financial stipends, which are determined by the Rector on the basis of individual circumstances. NIAS strives to ensure a reasonable level of support, but the stipend may not always be sufficient. Fellows are responsible for supplementing their means of support.
The maximum stipend that NIAS can award does not exceed half the gross annual salary of a university professor of equal rank and seniority in the Netherlands. In practice, this means that full financial stipends range from approximately € 2000 to € 4300 per month.
Free accomodation is offered to unaccompanied fellows and housing at subsidised rates to fellows who bring their partners or families.
Accomodation is offered in apartments on NIAS grounds and family homes in Wassenaar.
The Institute will reimburse fellows' travel costs to and from NIAS (not family).
Please note, that NIAS is a residential institute and that regular fellowships are awarded for advanced research during a full academic year, running from 1 September till 30 June, although a five-month period is also possible. NIAS does not provide fellowships for training programmes or educational purposes. Nor does it offer courses, or financial support to conduct research elsewhere.
Note: Holding a Ph.D. degree is a prerequisite for eligibility.

In aanmerking voor een NIAS fellowship komen gepromoveerde Nederlandse en buitenlandse wetenschapsbeoefenaren, die in belangrijke mate hebben bijgedragen tot de ontwikkeling van hun vakgebied.
Het fellowship biedt hun gelegenheid gedurende een periode van tien maanden (september tot en met juni), vrij van onderwijs- en bestuurstaken, onderzoek naar eigen keuze te verrichten.
Aanvragen voor één semester (september tot en met januari of februari tot en met juni) en voor drie maanden (september tot en met november, januari tot en met maart, april tot en met juni) worden eveneens in behandeling genomen.
Niet alleen wetenschapsbeoefenaren met een al gevestigde reputatie, maar ook jongere, veelbelovende onderzoekers komen voor plaatsing in aanmerking. Het beleid van de door de Akademie benoemde Wetenschapscommissie is er op gericht aan onderzoekers die op het instituut werkzaam zijn mogelijkheden te geven zowel tot ongestoorde wetenschapsbeoefening alsook tot interactie met collega's op het eigen vakgebied en op verwante vakgebieden. Daartoe worden jaarlijks één of meerdere themagroepen geformeerd, waarin een aantal Nederlandse en buitenlandse onderzoekers bij elkaar wordt gebracht. De themavoorstellen worden in het algemeen door daarvoor samenwerkende Nederlandse wetenschapsbeoefenaren ontwikkeld. Het instituut biedt echter ook plaats aan onderzoekers die buiten het verband van een themagroep onderzoek willen verrichten.

Vergoedingen
Voor Nederlandse onderzoekers is aan een onderzoeksplaats geen honorering verbonden. Wel kunnen Nederlandse NIAS-fellows in aanmerking komen voor een tegemoetkoming in de kosten van de waarneming van hun reguliere cursorische onderwijstaken aan hun faculteit gedurende hun verblijf aan het NIAS. De voorwaarden hiervoor zijn dat de faculteit niet beschikt over gelden afkomstig uit andere externe vervangingsregelingen, en dat de fellow en de faculteit stemmen in met de verlofregeling die geldt voor NIAS-stipendiaten. Zij tekenen hiertoe een overeenkomst.
Het beschikbare bedrag is € 25.000 voor fellows die tien maanden aan het NIAS verblijven en € 12.500 voor één semester-fellows. De vergoedingsregeling geldt niet voor fellowships van drie maanden.
Voorts zijn er regelingen voor de gehele of gedeeltelijke vergoeding van de reis- en verbijfskosten.
De Wetenschapscommissie adviseert welke personen in de gelegenheid kunnen worden gesteld in het instituut te werken.
Van de Nederlandse onderzoekers die een uitnodiging voor een bepaald jaar hebben aanvaard, wordt verwacht dat zij dat jaar ook daadwerkelijk op het instituut aanwezig zijn. Dit is van wezenlijk belang voor de ontwikkeling van de onderlinge contacten, in het bijzonder met de buitenlandse onderzoekers. Alleen op deze wijze worden de mogelijkheden tot internationalisering die het NIAS biedt ten volle benut.
Het uitnodigingsbeleid van het NIAS is erop gericht een evenwichtige opbouw van iedere jaargroep tot stand te brengen, met ruime mogelijkheden tot onderlinge interactie, door themavorming en anderszins. Dit impliceert dat een uitnodiging voor een bepaald jaar die door betrokkene niet kan worden aanvaard, niet automatisch in een volgend jaar kan worden benut.

Application Form Regular Fellowship (non-Dutch scholars)

Information received from you will be treated as strictly confidential and will only be used by the Scholarship Committee, selected External Referees and the Directorate. You are requested to limit the enclosures to a maximum of three pages double spaced text.
Three letters in support of your application should be sent separately by professional referees. These referees should not be affiliated with the applicant's home institution, and preferably be from outside the applicant's home country (or state in case of the US). These letters should contain the referee's views on:
- the applicant's scholarly accomplishments
- the applicant's research proposal
- the applicant's ability to exchange ideas in an international, interdisciplinary community.
The letters of support should be sent by the application deadline to Application@NIAS.KNAW.NL indicating the name of the applicant in the subject. Letters sent by regular mail to NIAS, Research Planning, will not be refused; letters by fax will not be accepted.
Applications that do not meet the requirements will not be considered.
Please note, that the number of scholars expressing interest far exceeds the number of fellowships which are available.
Books or publications submitted in support of an application should be sent by regular mail, and will be returned after completion of the selection procedure in case your application is unsuccessful. Publications by successful applicants will be placed in the NIAS library.
