Jan Rosseel selected as artist-in-residence

16 April 2015

The Flemish photographer Jan Rosseel is selected as the first artist-in-residence, a fellowship set up by NIAS and the KNAW's Society of Arts. Rosseel will explore the relationships between historical events, memory and photography.

About Jan Rosseel's Work

Rosseel's work is best described as visual storytelling, between narration and documentation. "I work as a collector of memories using photography, video and objects. The starting point of my research-based projects are historical events and the notion of memory."

At NIAS, Rosseel will study the role of photography in the construction of the past, by exploring for example the Paris attacks of January 2015, and the rise of IS and Pegida. He will reside at the institute from September 2015 to January 2016.

About the Fellowship

The artist-in-residence fellowship is set up by NIAS and the Society of Arts, and aims to stimulate cross-pollination between the sciences and arts.
